Early life: from Moscow to Mecklenburg

Only a few facts about her childhood are on the public record. This page sets them out and puts them in context. It does not fill the gaps with speculation.

What is documented

Three sources, one consistent account

  • Birth: 1 May 1990 in Moscow, Russia, according to the Bundestag and the Federal Government.
  • Arrival: at the age of six, with her family, in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Her own website states that the family had fled the political conditions in Iraq. The year 1996 follows from her age and is not stated as such in any source.
  • First place in Germany: her website names the reception centre for refugees in Horst as a place that strongly shaped her.
  • Schooling: Abitur in 2008 at the Gymnasium Fridericianum in Schwerin, according to the Bundestag.

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in the 1990s

The state she arrived in was itself in transition. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania was created in 1990 when the GDR acceded to the Federal Republic. Through the 1990s it went through deindustrialisation, high unemployment and the out-migration of younger people to western Germany. Refugees and late repatriates were distributed to the eastern states under federal allocation rules. Reception centres were often their first point of contact with German institutions.

This is general historical context about the region. It is not a description of her family's circumstances, which are not documented in public sources.

Schwerin

Schwerin is the state capital and the smallest of Germany's sixteen state capitals, with roughly 98,000 inhabitants. It became the city she associates herself with. She lives there, boxes at the local club BC Traktor Schwerin, and the Bundestag lists her as a member of the skatepark association Skatepark Lankow e.V.
